The “Grande Maïre” has been Natura 2000 listed, under the European “Fauna-Flora-Habitat” directive of 1992. It is home to 14 habitats of community interest. This area has two lagoons, the “Maïre” and the “Rivièrette”, which represent an ancient arm of the River Orb. This site, where fresh water and salt water lie alongside each other, has a wide variety of natural habitats. With dunes, mudflats (where the vegetation is dominated by samphire) and salt meadows, the landscape is extremely diverse. For around ten years now, a reed bed has been forming in the heart of the site.
